FRIDAY 15 DECEMBER
Dr John HALLEY (Aristotle University, Greece.)
"What kind of Variability is Ecological Variability?"
Abstract:-
The variability of ecological population abundance tends to increase
with time, this fact is observed universally, which causes serious
problems if we attempt to to characterise and compare populations
represented by samples of different sizes. Ultimately, any progress
towards solving this problem will depend on a closer look at
ecological variability from a statistical perspective. In this talk,
in the light of the analysis of a large number of ecological time
series, I will be looking at three main topics:
(i) The historical assumption that population abundance tends to be
lognormally-distributed. Is it valid? (ii) Fractal-based
alternatives to the lognormal model. Should ecologists take a closer
look at the stock market?
(iii) Why are ecological spectra "reddened"?
