JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Senior Lecturer In Medical Statistics

Grade: Non Clinical Senior Lecturer

Responsible To: Director of Research and Development and Professor of Health
Services Research at the School of Public Policy, UCL
Head of Department, Department of Statistical Science

Location: Located jointly within the Research & Development Directorate,
UCLH and the Department of Statistical Science, UCL

Job Summary
This is a joint appointment between UCLH and the Department of Statistical
Science, UCL (a 60:40 split is envisaged).

Within the Trust the Senior Lecturer will have three primary roles, the
first to improve the research environment and the methodological quality of
research within the Trust.  The second to collaborate on specific research
proposals and projects.  Finally, there is a need to help with the
development of a strategy to train individuals for research.

Within Statistical Science, the Senior Lecturer will be expected to pursue
methodological research and to help to develop awareness of and expertise in
the use of advanced statistical methodology in medical research through UCL,
as well as to contribute to the teaching of the department.


Main Duties And Responsibilities

1. To provide consultancy and training to researchers in UCLH.  This will
include one-off meetings and advice on issues including study design,
grant-writing and analysis, paper-writing and getting research published.

2. To collaborate in ongoing research projects, often initiated as a result
of prior consultation, and leading to co-authorship on articles submitted to
biomedical journals.

3. To pursue research in statistical methodology and research methods,
appropriate for publication in the statistical literature.

4. To help train researchers and health professionals in the Trust and UCL,
in statistics and research methods. This wil include introductory level and
specialised short courses, e.g. clinical trials, research methodology,
survival analysis, critical appraisal, use of statistical software.

5. To help provide undergraduate/postgraduate teaching within the department
of Statistical Science when appropriate.

6. To provide professional supervision for two medical statisticians in the
Trust's R&D Directorate.

7. To contribute to the wider development of research and audit activity
within the  Trust.
