PROBLEMS IN MEASURING THE NEW ECONOMY
The rapid growth, and often sharply falling prices, of the information
technology, media and telecommunications sectors along with the development
of the internet have presented statisticians with major new problems. These
affect not just the measurement of the sectors themselves but also data for
the whole economy. Can statisticians keep up with the frenetic gestation
and disappearance of the dot.coms? How is e-commerce being tracked? And
how do all these issues affect the assessment of the performance of the
whole economy? Chris Drew will talk about how the ONS is identifying and
responding to these and other issues while James Sergeant and Mary O'Mahony
will give brief presentations on the statistical implications of government
e-policy and productivity measurement respectively.
