SENIOR INFORMATION ANALYST
NHS INFORMATION AUTHORITY, WINCHESTER
Permanent Post
Salary - Senior Manager 19 - #26,335
The current NHS priorities of Clinical Governance and Performance Assessment
make information now, more than ever, crucial to the effective running of the
NHS. This is an exciting time to be developing the role of information in NHS
management.
A variety of data are widely available in the NHS, but these tend to be
dispersed and unconnected. The challenge for the NHS is to pull these disparate
sources together to produce a comprehensive view of population needs for care,
current services delivered and the efficiency and effectiveness of the care
provided, spanning populations and care settings.
The Casemix Programme of the NHS Information Authority, a Special Health
Authority of the NHS, is developing an analytical framework to help the NHS
manage and analyse such data. This framework is in the form of a matrix of
groupings of people in the population according to their needs for care (Health
Benefit Groups) and groupings of healthcare activity (Healthcare Resource
Groups). These groupings are increasingly being used by Health Authorities,
Primary Care Groups and Hospitals across the NHS.
We are seeking to appoint a Senior Analyst to join a team of seven analysts and
statisticians to help operationalise the framework by:
* identifying disparate but routinely available data sources across the NHS
relating to both secondary and primary care;
* pulling these sources together to build a comprehensive picture of current
healthcare need and activity, providing national benchmarks;
* contributing to the development of analytical processes by which the NHS can
increasingly turn local data into useful and reliable information
The post will also include scope for considerable contribution to other related
areas of work within the NHS Information Authority and NHS Executive, for
example further development of casemix groupings, electronic patient records and
minimum datasets, and the development of the NHS Performance Assessment
Framework.
We are looking for a person with broad experience of the use of information in
the management of the NHS, good mathematical and analytical ability, preferably
with a degree in Maths, Computing or Statistics or a related diploma.
Familiarity with the Windows environment, the UNIX operating system and SAS
statistical software would also be beneficial.
For an informal discussion about the post, please telephone Peter Benton,
