Systematic Reviews in Health Care
META-ANALYSIS IN CONTEXT
Wednesday 31st May to Friday 2nd June 2000
This course is for those who want to critically appraise
and/or perform systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The
course will cover the rationale, potential, principles and
limitations of systematic reviews and discuss the
appropriate place of meta-analysis. Graphical and
statistical methods to detect publication and other
reporting biases and the assessment of the quality of
component studies will be covered. Teaching methods include
formal lectures, group work and computer practicals using
Stata software. An optional introductory session to Stata
will be available.

DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF RANDOMISED CONTROLLED TRIALS
Monday 2nd October to Friday 6th October 2000
The course aims to provide an understanding of the key
issues in the design, analysis and reporting of randomised
controlled trials. The course will cover the rationale and
fundamental principles of randomised controlled trials, and
the key stages in the design and conduct of a randomised
trial. The application of statistical methods to the
analysis of trial data is also covered, including
adjustment for covariates, handling non-compliance and
missing data, subgroup analyses and multiple outcomes.
Teaching methods include formal lectures, group discussions
and computer practicals using Stata software.
