LECTURER POSITION
We wish to recruit a Lecturer in Probability and Statistics, with
potential security of employment. Terms are comparable to those for
an Assistant Professor. Primary duties of the position include teaching
and advising undergraduates. Possible emphases include actuarial
methods, applied statistics, mathematical statistics, probability,
general education. Starting date July 1 2001.
Requirements are Ph.D. in Statistics, demonstrated aptitude in teaching
and excellent communication skills.

The Department of Statistics and Applied Probability was created in 1989,
and has developed a broad range of interests. Courses are offered leading
to Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees. At present there are about thirty
undergraduate majors (several emphasising actuarial science) and thirty
graduate students. The Department is looking to expand its undergraduate
degree options and the numbers of majors and joint majors. The new
appointment is expected to contribute in a major way to the Department's
development of undergraduate education.
Faculty interests currently include Bayesian computation, bootstrap methods,
comparison of experiments, directional data analysis, functional data
analysis, heavy-tailed stochastic models, massive data sets and retrieval
algorithms, nonparametric modelling, smoothing spline methods, stochastic
models in finance, and time series.
UC Santa Barbara is located in Goleta, on the shores of the Pacific,
neighboring the beautiful city of Santa Barbara. The area has a population of
less than 200,000, yet has excellent amenities. The climate is ideal.
