	INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION
	University of London

	RESEARCH LECTURER/SENIOR RESEARCH LECTURER

The Institute

The Institute of Education is a College within the Federal University of
London with more than 4,400 postgraduate students and approximately 590
staff. It is the largest postgraduate centre for the study of Education in
the United Kingdom. The Institute has received the highest rating for the
quality of its research in each of the four reviews undertaken by the
Funding Council.

The Institute's mission is to pursue excellence in education and related
areas. Staff become members of an academic group to match their particular
interests and contributions and they carry out work in three programme
areas. Research staff work in the Research programme area; the other areas
are Initial Teacher Education and Professional Development.

The Post

The post is intended to further strengthen quantitative research in the
Institute of Education and will be located in the Mathematical Sciences
group. This group has a wide range of interests including mathematics
education, assessment, and multilevel statistical modelling. There is an
active statistics group, which will provide a supportive environment in
relation to your academic and professional development.

Roles and Responsibilities

· for appointment at Senior Research Lecturer level you will be expected to
promote, develop and expand funded research and consultancy within the
Institute and obtain grants in your own right. If appointed at Research
Lecturer level you will be expected to assume some of these responsibilities;

· to contribute to the advancement of scholarship in your specialist field,
through publications and other research activity, such research activity to
be at a level of national and international significance;

· to provide research support and training, including the supervision of
students pursuing PhD and EdD programmes;

· to advise colleagues at all levels with the preparation of research
proposals in quantitative methods and analysis;

· for appointment at Senior Research Lecturer level you will be expected to
contribute to the professional and staff development of research staff and
act as a mentor to junior research staff;

· to organise and contribute to statistics teaching across the different
Programme Areas;

· to undertake other such duties as may be requested by the Director.

You will be responsible to the Head of Mathematical Sciences, the Dean of
Research and, ultimately, to the Director of the Institute.

You are welcome to contact any of the following members of the group if you
would like to discuss the post:
Professor Alison Wolf (email: [log in to unmask], tel: 020 7612 6661)
Professor Harvey Goldstein (email: [log in to unmask], tel: 0207 612 6652)
Dr Jon Rasbash (email: [log in to unmask], tel: 020 7612 6681)

Selection Criteria

Essential

Education and experience

1. A contribution to research and publications and to the development of
your field commensurate with the level of the post;

2. Experience of funded research projects. For appointment at Senior
Research Lecturer level experience of managing projects will be required;

3. A clear programme of future research;

4. For appointment at Senior Research Lecturer level an excellent record of
obtaining research grants, preferably including grants from Research Councils;

5. Ability to communicate statistical concepts to non-experts;

6. A recognised contribution to quantitative research methods.

Personal Styles, Skills and Qualities

7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

8. The ability to be flexible and adaptable and to work as an effective
member of a team;

9. The ability to coach, guide and develop the statistical understanding of
colleagues;

10. The ability to contribute to staff and professional development
activities;

11. The ability to be highly organised, exercise initiative and work
independently.

You should include with your application a separate supporting statement of
how your qualifications, experience and training fit in turn each of the
selection criteria and include a statement covering (all or some) the
following:

· your plans for future research;
· a proposal for funding possibilities for the proposed research.

This supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and
thus, regretfully, a failure to provide such a document will mean that your
application will not be considered.

If you are invited to interview you will be asked to submit in advance
copies of a report from a research project in which you have been involved.

The Appointment

The appointment will be full time. Salary, dependent on qualifications and
experience, will be on either Research Staff Grade II salary scale, £23,256
- £30,967, plus £2,134 LA per annum, for appointment at Research Lecturer
level or the Research Staff Grade III salary scale, £29,332 - £36,740 per
annum, plus £2,134 London Allowance per annum for appointment at Senior
Research Lecturer level.

The appointed person, in consultation with the Director (or appointee) and
the Head of Group (or appointee), will agree medium and long term targets
for income generation through research grants, consultancy and other means,
in accordance with the Institute's Strategic Plan. Progress towards these
targets will be evaluated as part of the annual review process. It is
anticipated that this income generation will largely offset the costs of
this post.

You are asked to indicate whether you wish to be considered for appointment
at Research Lecturer or Senior Research Lecturer level. In indicating your
preference your attention is drawn to the roles, responsibilities and
selection criteria for the post. If you wish to be considered for
appointment at Senior Research Lecturer level, you will be expected to
demonstrate how you meet the requirements and selection criteria for the post.

Job share will be considered. Applicants wishing to do so are asked to
indicate their preferred pattern of working. Applications from joint
applicants should be submitted together.

You would be eligible to join the recommended occupational pension scheme
for Universities, the Universities' Superannuation Scheme (USS) whereby the
employee pays 6.35% of salary and the Institute contributes the equivalent
of 14% of salary. USS is a funded scheme which is 'contracted out' of
SERPS and membership is generally transferable to and from other public
sector schemes. Alternatively under the provisions of the Social Security
Act 1986 you may take out a personal pension.

The leave allowance is 30 working days per annum. The Institute is closed
on Public Holidays which are supplemented by 6 extra days (normally 3 at
Christmas, 2 at Easter and 1 in August).

Staff are normally required to live within a radius of 30 miles of the
Institute of Education.

The Application Procedure

Please submit 5 collated copies* of your application, each of which should
include:
-	the application form (please specify the post title and the reference
R/SRL/2),
-	the supporting statement, and
-	any other documentation, eg. a CV, you wish to be considered by the
Selection Committee.

· A copy of your application is given to each member of the Selection

result in your application being disregarded. If there are particular
reasons why this may be difficult for you, please ring either the Personnel
Officer (020-7612 6357) or one of the Personnel Administrators (020-7612
6354/6356/6472) who will do their best to help you.

We also require one copy of the monitoring form which will be kept in
Personnel and used for monitoring purposes only.
