Summary
This talk will consider the widely studied problem of estimating numbers of
trips between each origin-destination (O-D) pair on a transport network
from traffic counts observed on network links. The theoretical foundations
of this problem will be discussed. We shall address the issue of what
precisely should be estimated - the actual number of O-D trips that gave
rise to the observed link flows, or the underlying O-D trip rates? We shall
then consider the feasibility of estimating O-D matrices from link flow
data only. The conventional wisdom in the transport literature has been that
such estimation is impossible without a target matrix (obtained from prior
information such as an out-of-date O-D matrix, for example). We
demonstrate that this conventional wisdom is incorrect, and has arisen as a
consequence of unnecessary linearisation of the problem.
