I have been asked to post this to the list:
The University of Birmingham
Division of Medicine - Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU)
Medical Statistician
The BCTU, directed by Professor Richard Gray, receives core funding from the
NHS to undertake and support clinical trial research across a wide range of
medical specialties. The Unit provides an advisory service to clinicians
wishing to undertake clinical trials, and also adopts a proactive role by
undertaking meta-analyses of current evidence, and instigating new clinical
trials in key areas where current evidence is inadequate. The BCTU's main
in-house studies are in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, renal
disease, and leukaemia, but the Unit is also providing support for over 100
other studies. The BCTU provides a pleasant and stimulating environment.
This new vacancy provides an outstanding opportunity for a statistician
wishing to develop their methodological expertise in clinical trial research
within a successful, expanding research Unit. (Already, since its
establishment in 1997, the BCTU has been awarded over £2 million in
external funding.)
We wish to appoint a statistician to join the expanding team and play a
central role which will include: designing trials and assessing their
feasibility, development of data management systems, analysis and reporting
of trials, and meta-analyses of existing data. A good class degree in
statistics or other numerate discipline is essential. Applicants should
also have a postgraduate qualification, or at least 1 year's experience in
applied statistics. Applicants should have strong statistical and computing
skills, a working knowledge of statistical packages (preferably SAS), good
attention to detail, the ability to communicate statistical issues to non
statisticians, and a desire to develop skills in applied medical statistics.
Alternatively, we would also consider applications from candidates from a
computing background, especially those with good Access and SQL server
skills,
who have some knowledge of medical statistics and who are interested in
developing a career in a more statistical direction.
The post is funded until March 2002 initially. Salary on a range £16,286 -
£24,479 per year - more for exceptional candidates.
Informal enquiries may be made to the Unit's Deputy Director, Dr Keith
Wheatley, on 0121 687 2310 ([log in to unmask]).
