THE OFFICE FOR NATIONAL STATISTICS (ONS) plays a key role in compiling,
analysing and disseminating a wide range of information on
society, population, health, the labour market, business and the
economy.
The ONS is continually working to improve the quality and integrity of
statistics and to meet the developing needs of our customers. Central to
this are statisticians, social scientists and geographers who provide
methodological guidance and support to the rest of the organisation. These
specialist posts provide the opportunity to play an important part in
reviewing current methods, researching alternatives and devising innovative
and practical solutions for social and economic statistics.
Posts are available at different levels:
Principal Methodologists (£31k-£48k), Senior Methodologists (£24k-£36k),
Methodologists (£20k-£30k) and Assistant Methodologists (£17k-£26k)
Methodologists in ONS are specialists operating as a force for achieving
integrated, coherent statistics across the ONS and National Statistics and
for sharing best practice. The vision is to advance our scientific strength
and a build a world class statistical infrastructure by developing
expertise in these areas:
Sample design and estimation
Data collection methods
Geography and spatial analysis
Longitudinal analysis statistical modelling
Time series and seasonal adjustment
Statistical disclosure
Editing and imputation
Quality measurement
Survey and questionnaire design
Requirements vary for different posts vary but you will need:
at least a 2(i) degree in statistics, mathematics or a social science
with substantial statistical content;
a higher degree is desirable;
experience in research, analysing statistics and presenting statistical
results;
ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
knowledge of statistical computing software, ideally including SAS or
SPSS;
additionally some posts require one or more of:
skills in database design and manipulation of large data sets prior to
statistical analysis;
experience of statistical model fitting;
experience of designing and analysing large scale social surveys;
experience of geographic/demographic analysis and/or GIS techniques;
numerical analytic techniques applied to the development of statistical
algorithms;
and for posts at a more senior level:
statistical/research consultancy skills;
experience in managing customers, staff and research projects.
Posts will be permanent subject to successful completion of a probation
period. Starting salary will depend on level of appointment,
qualifications, experience and location (London or national rates apply).
