THE CAMBRIDGE STATISTICS DISCUSSION GROUP
Thursday 2nd March 2000 7:15 for 7:45
Statistical Laboratory,
16 Mill Lane, Cambridge
Anecdotal Evidence for a Statistician by Environment
Interaction
Karen Moore,
The Statwood Partnership,
Hitchen
Abstract:
Four of my job descriptions have included the words 'applied' and
'statistician' somewhere in the text. This talk will focus on the role
of a statistician in a research environment highlighting some
similarities/differences between types of organisation (public sector,
global multi-national and contract research) and between disciplines/products
(agriculture, consumer goods and medicine). Case studies of
'typical analyses' will be used to show the statistician's day-to-day
work and the form of the 'deliverable' expected by a research colleague,
a client or the customer. Given the diverse ways of working across
research environments, there should be potential to improve the products
and services that we offer as applied statisticians.
Speaker:
Karen has had a somewhat varied career as an applied statistician working
at Rothamsted, in Icelandic agriculture, in consumer goods at Unilever
and in the pharmaceutical Industry at her current port of call, the Statwood
Partnership.
