This message is aimed at UK and Irish members of the American
Statistical Association.
You will be aware that each year the ASA creates a number of
Fellows (55 this year). It has been recognized that 'isolated' groups
of statisticians are under-represented amongst Fellows, where
'isolated' in this context includes members outside N. America. I am
part of a group whose aim is to redress the imbalance, and my
responsibility is to facilitate nominations from ASA members in the
UK and Ireland (despite being out of the UK until late January).
The October issue of Amstat News (p16) invites nominations and
there is a web page which gives further details of nomination
procedures, and nomination forms:
https://www.amstat.org/awards/index.html
There is also a list of current Fellows at
http://www.amstat.org/awards/fellows-find.asp
What is not easily accessible is a list of all UK and Ireland members
and whether or not they are Fellows. I have access to such a list
(though I cannot pass it on), and there are a substantial number of
people on the list who I believe are eminently qualified to be
nominated as Fellows. However, my main role is to facilitate, not
nominate. I would therefore be pleased to receive suggestions of
potential nominees, especially from members who would be willing to
act as nominators. This is a non-trivial task, but my understanding
is that nominations are usually prepared with the knowledge and
help of the nominee, which makes things a bit easier. The deadline
for nominations for 2001 is March 1st 2001, but action needs to be
taken much sooner to get everything in place for a nomination.
It is clear from perusal of the list I have that there are more than a
few excellent statisticians in the UK and Ireland who are members of
the ASA, but who have not been honoured as Fellows. I need your
help to increase the international visibility of the quality of statistics
and statisticians in these islands. You can, of course, submit
nominations without involving me, but I would appreciate being kept
informed if you do, to avoid possible duplication of effort.
Thanks
Ian Jolliffe
