NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE IN SCOTLAND
COMMON SERVICES AGENCY
INFORMATION AND STATISTICS DIVISION
Statistician
Salary up to £21,378 per annum, pro rata
(depending on qualifications and experience)
The Information and Statistics Division (ISD) provides statistical and
information management advice to the Scottish Executive Health Department,
health boards, NHS trusts and a wide variety of professional groups
concerned with the planning and management of the NHS in Scotland. Within
ISD, the Scottish Cancer Intelligence Unit (SCIU) includes the functions of
cancer registration, surveillance and epidemiology, and the evaluation of
screening and therapy. The Unit is a well established source of information
on cancer used by clinicians, policy-makers and researchers in Scotland and
internationally.
We now wish to appoint a Statistician on a six month contract/secondment to
play a key role in the provision of statistical support for the Scottish
Audit of Gastric-Oesophageal Cancer project. This study is funded by the
Clinical Resource and Audit Group and is designed to assess patterns of
management of care and outcome of patients diagnosed with gastric or
oesophageal tumours in Scotland. The post-holder will be expected to provide
and interpret data and will liaise closely with the group of clinicians
involved in this study. The work of the post-holder will also involve
contributing to the running of the SCIU ad hoc information request service
and the provision of data to various statistical publications. This is an
interesting and challenging post which requires good analytical and
communication skills. Applications are invited from graduates in a numerate
discipline. Experience in health information or medical statistics,
including a knowledge of SPSS, is essential.
There is a strong possibility that further employment will be offered beyond
6 months.
For an informal discussion about this new post, please contact Catherine
Thomson on 0131 551 8998 or Helen Brown on 0131 551 8304.
Application forms and further information can be obtained from Martin Gibb,
Room B027, Information and Statistics Division, Trinity Park House, South
Trinity Road, EDINBURGH, EH5 3SQ. Tel: 0131 551 8471. Closing date Friday 10
November.
