THREE RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS
SCHOOL OF COMPUTING AND MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES,
UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH, LONDON, UK
Two research studentships are available in Applied Probability and
Stochastic processes. Candidates should have a strong mathematical
background with some knowledge of stochastic processes and statistics.
A minimum of a 'good upper second' in Mathematics or Statistics is
necessary, and candidates with an MSc in Probability, Statistics,
Financial Mathematics, Functional Analysis or Differential Equations
are particularly encouraged to apply.
The research topics would be in the following areas of Applied
Probability:
· Markov Processes (in particular, Markov Jump Processes) and their
applications in physics, biology and finance. (contact :Dr Anyue
Chen; E-mail [log in to unmask]) ·
Stochastic Geometry, Temporal and Spatial Stochastic processes,
Spatial Statistics, (contact Dr John Gates;
E-mail: [log in to unmask] )
· Point Processes (in particular Hidden Markov Processes) and their
applications in Environmental modelling. (contact Dr N. Ramesh;
E-mail: [log in to unmask] )
One studentship is available in Applied and Computational Statistics.
A good mathematical and computing background is required with an
Honours Degree, or MSc, in Mathematics, statistics, computing. The
research project would be on:
· "Biodiversity mapping from space". Use of classification techniques
on satellite imagery to form maps of natural resources, and their
biodiversity, with accuracy measures. (Contact Professor Keith
Rennolls; E-mail: [log in to unmask] )
The studentships are for three years duration, to start October 2000
(or, as soon as possible thereafter). They are open to applicants of
any nationality. Fluency in English is necessary. The studentships
include a waiver of tuition fees and a bursary of about £7,000 per
annum.
Further details of the research in the areas of Mathematical Sciences
at the School are available from http://cms1.gre.ac.uk . Contact
Professor Keith Rennolls (telephone: (+ 44) 0208 331 8717 Fax: (+44)

enquiries.
Please send a CV with a covering letter stating areas of interest and
