PHD STUDENTSHIP IN BIOINFORMATICS
A 3-year PhD studentship is available with BioSS (Biomathematics &
Statistics Scotland) to collaborate in the development of the Scottish
Genomic Microarray Facility. DNA microarrays are a powerful new
technique for studying gene expression. Funding from SHEFC has allowed
the establishment of this facility, centred in Edinburgh University,
that brings together expertise from a wide range of disciplines
including bioinformatics and statistics.
Before the huge potential of microarray technology can be fully
exploited, many statistical issues surrounding the interpretation of the
large volumes of data generated need to be addressed. Exploratory
graphical methods, such as hierarchical clustering, are already used to
assist in identifying structures in the data, but further methods are
needed, including seriation and multidimensional scaling. Appropriate
statistical models also need to be developed. Issues of quality control
also arise, and the final inference needs to take account of propagating
uncertainties that arise at each stage of an analysis.
BioSS has an international reputation in mathematics and statistics
applied in the biological sciences. For further details, see:
http://www.bioss.ac.uk
The award includes full university fees (for EU nationals), a
maintenance allowance of 9000 pounds/year (for UK nationals) and a
travel allowance. Applicants should have, or shortly expect to obtain,
a first or upper second class degree in mathematics, statistics,
informatics, mathematical biology, or a related subject. Biology
graduates with a strong interest in bioinformatics and good
computational skills will also be considered.
