Innovations with area classifications
Wednesday 21 June 2000
Exploring individual and spatial variation using a multilevel
modelling approach
A one day workshop to be held in the Small Training Room,
Manchester Computing
Mark Tranmer and Ed Fieldhouse
The workshop will demonstrate the use of multilevel models in
exploring individual and area level variations in socio-economic
outcomes, drawing on the examples of deprivation and
unemployment. In particular, it will focus on how we can exploit
the potential of the small area classification which has recently
been added to the 2% Individual Sample of Anonymised
Records (SAR). Because most SAR data are categorical,
MLwiN will be used to fit multilevel models with binary
response variables. Three types of model are described,
beginning with a two level model, extending this to a three level
nested model, and finally assuming a cross-classified population
structure. Although the workshop aims to give a practical
introduction to the use of the area classification and multilevel
models, some statistical theory and substantive interpretation will
also be provided. Participants will be provided with an overview
of the research potential of area classification and how to use
this information a multilevel framework, using MLwiN.
