UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
Department of Statistics
DPhil Studentship in Mathematical Genetics
An EPSRC funded research studentship with financial support is available for
doctoral research into computationally intensive methods for inference about
selection in DNA sequences, supervised by Dr. R. C. Griffiths. This is an
exciting area on the interface between statistics, applied probability, and
modern genetics. There is currently a very substantial demand, which is
predicted to grow further, for graduates in the area, both from the academic
world and in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
University and college fees are paid by the grant, and there is a tax free
stipend starting at the standard EPSRC research studentship level (currently
6,620 pounds per annum) for a three year period. Applications are invited
from UK residents. (For EU residents outside the UK, the grant would pay
fees but not the stipend. Applications from such candidates are also
welcome.)
An ideal background would be one with a knowledge of applied stochastic
processes and computational techniques, but applications are welcome from
interested candidates with background in any area of statistics or
probability.
The Mathematical Genetics Group in the Department of Statistics at the
University of Oxford is one of the strongest in the world. It currently
involves four members of academic staff, seven postdoctoral fellows and four
research students, and has strong links to experimental research groups in
Oxford and abroad. The Mathematical Genetics web page (at
www.stats.ox.ac.uk/mathgen) has further details of the group, and
publications which can be downloaded.
The start date for the studentship is 1st October 2000.
