The 34th and perhaps last Midlands and Northern Universities Statistics
Group meeting was held at the Open University in April 2000. Continuation
of this series of meetings depends on an institution volunteering to
organise the meeting next year; no-one has come forward as yet.
I said `perhaps last' above since the meeting is not thriving and it is
not unreasonable to argue that it may be an idea that has run its course.
Potential organisers should note that the 2000 meeting attracted only 10
paying customers in total and of these only 7 came from the Midlands and
Northern region. Attendances at other recent MNUSG meetings have been low.
What is needed now is one or other or both of the following:
i) an institution to come forward and volunteer to organise the next MNUSG
meeting;
ii) a department or individual to come forward and `claim ownership' of
the meeting, with a view to ensuring its future.
Neither I personally nor the Open University Department of Statistics
intends to put any more effort into seeking continuation of this series of
meetings after this. If no-one takes over from us, there is the question
of what to do with the `float'.
Chris Jones.
