MRC BIOSTATISTICS UNIT, CAMBRIDGE
RESEARCH POST ON HIV AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES MODELLING

A new research position at the MRC Biostatistics Unit is available
to work on statistical modelling of communicable diseases, in particular
the modelling of the HIV epidemic in England and Wales. The applicant
will join a multi-disciplinary team, including senior statisticians and
epidemiologists, concerned with the development and application of new
modelling techniques to estimate incidence and prevalence of HIV in the
new era of effective treatment.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to continuing
developmental work, the implementation of new approaches and
investigation of their limitations and their possible application to
other infectious diseases. The post holder is also expected to contribute
to the preparation of regular reports, as part of the ongoing assessments
of the HIV epidemic in this country, and to produce scientific papers for
publication and presentation at meetings.
The appointment will be for two years with a likely extension for a third
year and it is funded by Glaxo Wellcome.
Applicants should have: a higher degree (MSc, MPhil or PhD in medical statistics);
ability to work in a team and good communication skills; ability to undertake
independent research to identify problems and possible solutions;
good IT skills with knowledge of statistical packages
(knowledge of programming languages would be an advantage).
An appointment in MRC Band 4 (£16,280 - £29,362 per annum) is expected,
with an initial salary likely in the range £19,500 to £23,500.
