Title: "Genetic Epidemiology:
How do we locate genes associated with human disease?"
Abstract:
"The fields of human genetics and statistics have had a long
association. In this talk I will present an overview of the
application of statistical methods to the genetics of human diseases.
The study designs used to assess whether there is genetic involvement
in a particular disease, and where the defective gene(s) might be,
will be presented. The application and potential pitfalls of these
methods to both simple Mendelian and more complex human diseases will
be discussed."
Wednesday 31st January 2001, time 2:30, Hertford Campus, Room M1

Title: "Swimming, cycling and running - how do you find the best
athlete?"
Abstract:
"The outcome of athletics events is on the face of it quite
straightforward - the first person across the line or the
longest/highest throw/jump is the winner. There are however issues in
comparing performances between events - is a 100m time "better" (in
some sense) than a 200m time (or than a marathon)? These issues are
particularly relevant for multi-sports events, where the outcome is an
aggregate of performances in several disciplines. Examples of such
events are the decathlon (and heptathlon) where systems of points
scoring in each component discipline allow a run to be compared with a
throw. Recently triathlon (swimming, cycling and running) was included
in the Olympics. Here the winner is the first athlete across the line,
meaning that 1 second of swimming is taken to be equivalent to 1
second of cycling. Data from these events is examined to see how the
relative strengths of the athletes in each discipline contribute to
their overall placings and whether the order of the component
disciplines favours certain strengths."
