Opportunities for Survey Methods Researchers/ Statisticians
The Survey Methods Centre at the National Centre for Social Research is
looking to recruit two enthusiastic researchers, one at a senior level and
one at a junior level.
The ideal candidate for the senior post will have at least three years
experience of designing and running surveys, a demonstrable interest in
survey methods and formal training in statistics. A track record of
publication would be an advantage. Experience of teaching would also be
advantageous, though not essential.
For the junior post, candidates should have at least a Masters degree in
statistics, research methods or a related subject and/or experience of
survey methods research.
For both posts, essential requirements are enthusiasm, good communication
skills (written and oral) and the ability to analyse problems in a critical
and rigorous way. Familiarity with SPSS and STATA would be useful.
The posts will both involve carrying out original methodological research
as well as sample design, weighting and statistical support for National
Centre surveys. Making presentations and writing research papers are key
components of the posts. There may also be opportunities to lecture on
short courses in survey methods. In all these roles, the post holders will
work in close collaboration with colleagues.
The National Centre for Social Research is Britain's largest independent
social research institute and is funded by central government, other public
sector organisations and charitable trusts. Surveys carried out by the
National Centre include the British Social Attitudes Survey, British
General Election Survey, British Crime Survey and Health Survey for
England. The Survey Methods Centre is an integral part of the National
Centre and consists of a team of nine researchers plus an administrator.
The National Centre offers a lively and challenging working environment and
favourable terms of employment (including generous holiday entitlement, an
excellent pension scheme and a 9-day working fortnight). The posts are
based at the National Centre's head office in Islington, London. Salary
