Dear all,
As many of you will already be aware, the Royal Statistical Society has been undertaking
a review of its IT provision over the past few months. As part of that review process,
I was asked to consult the Fellowship of the Society as to the "desirable outcomes" of this
review and to provide a summary report. The report was presented to RSS Council
last Wednesday and it is hoped that on the basis of this report and any subsequent discussion
the Society will be able to produce a strategy for its future IT development.
Anyone who is interested, can download a copy of the report from the Society's recently relaunched
Web Site. The URL for the report is http://www.rss.org.uk/ITReport/index.html. I am happy to receive
any comments that people have at the address below.
On a related note, the report touches upon the issue of the Society's role with regard to the
maintenance and development of statistical discussion groups such as allstat. Those interested in
Paddy Riley's recent posting about the future of allstat might like to look at section 3 of the
report.
Further to Adrian Bowman's posting, the RSS Council agreed that it should, in principle, take
over the running of the allstat list once the funds at LTSN run out in September. It is hoped that
the Society will not only adopt the list, but continue to develop it, and the Society has already
been in discussions with the current maintainers about ways in which the list might develop.
As I said, these ideas are discussed in more detail in section 3 of the report, but I would welcome
any comments and/or suggestions from any allstat user on this issue in particular. (Messages
should be sent to me and NOT to the list).
Many thanks
Steve
