Clinical Effectiveness Support Unit,
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
Salary within the Research 1A / Lecturer 1A scales
(depending on experience)
The CESU is a multi-disciplinary, young and enthusiastic
research team that includes epidemiologists, clinicians and
medical informatics specialists. Our aim is to develop,
promote and support clinical effectiveness issues related
to Women's Health. The work of the unit includes the
production of evidence based guidelines, systematic review,
audit/survey and the development of clinical outcome
indicators. The Royal College of Obstetricians and
Gynaecologists is a membership organisation concerned with
professional standards, training and education in
Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The postholder will be part of a team working on the
national caesarean section audit and will provide the main
statistical support for the project. The aim of the audit is
to evaluate the role of factors associated with variation in
caesarean section such as place of delivery, the decision
making process and the influence of women's choice. In
addition, quality of clinical care against agreed standards
will be evaluated. These objectives will be met by data
collection from a number of sources. Data collection starts
on 1 May 2000 and continues for three months. The post is
therefore available from April/May 2000.
The main duties will include:
- setting up and maintaining the research project
databases: confidence and competence with computing and
database management is essential.
- data management
- data analysis: knowledge and skills with statistical
packages are a pre-requisite. It is anticipated that the
candidate will have a masters degree in medical statistics.
We currently use SPSS and Epi-Info but anticipate using
STATA for this project, although the preferences of the
postholder will influence this decision.
- writing interim and final reports
Closing date: Thursday 24th February
Probable interview date: Tuesday 14th March
