Position: Research and Development Group Leader/
          Senior Research Scientist,
          Business and Financial Engineering Group

Salary:   Attractive Remuneration Package.

We are seeking to recruit an internationally recognised research 
scientist to lead a multi-disciplinary team working on applied 
statistical and mathematical methods in the finance sector.

The appointee will direct and contribute to the development of 
major research strategies and will have the opportunity to develop 
significant collaborative projects.  The role offers a high degree 
of autonomy, innovation and creativity.

The successful applicant will have a relevant disciplinary 
background in statistical and mathematical methods and 
demonstrated domain knowledge of the finance industry.  A PhD or 
equivalent qualification with research experience
and a strong commitment to perform and apply research to the 
benefit of Australia is essential.  Excellent oral and written
communication skills necessary to effectively lead and manage a 
team and demonstrated ability to direct innovative statistical and 
mathematical research are critical to the role.

Role Description

The R&D Group Leader is responsible for a team of scientists 
carrying out strategic and applied research to meet the needs 
of Australian industry.  A Science and Industry Manager and a 
Business Development Manager support the R&D Group Leader in 
this work.

Responsibilities

1. In consultation with industry bodies, the Science and Industry 
   Manager and the Business Development Manager, develop a strategic 
   research and business plan that will secure the R&D Group's 
   scientific standing, deliver industry relevant research outputs 
   and achieve the total external income set for the Group by the 
   Division.

2. Provide research leadership to the R&D Group, ensuring that high 
   quality project outputs are delivered on schedule, and 
   facilitating the personal and professional development of a group
   of scientists.

3. Undertake high quality research and publish the results in 
   international peer-reviewed literature.

4. Prepare submissions for research funding to industry and government
   bodies, in collaboration with the Business Development Manager.

5. In conjunction with the Science & Industry Manager and the Business
   Development Manager, achieve external income targets determined for
   the R&D Group on a year by year basis.

6. Communicate the achievements and capabilities of the R&D Group to
   industry and the scientific community.

7. Manage the staff in the R&D Group, undertake performance management
   and career development activities and ensure compliance with CSIRO
   policies on equal employment opportunity, occupational health
   and safety and security.

8. Manage the R&D Group within its financial allocation.

9. Participate in CSIRO and Sector activities as appropriate.

10. Any other duties as directed.

Selection Criteria

It is in your interest to respond directly to these selection criteria
when applying for the position.

1. Significant experience in statistics and mathematics applied to
   the finance industry.

2. Significant publication in literature related to financial 
   statistics and mathematics.

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

4. Demonstrated ability to initiate and develop major application 
   projects.

5. Sound strategic thinking capability, and a sustained personal 
   vision for financial statistics and mathematics.

6. A successful track record of collaboration across agency and 
   disciplinary boundaries.

7. Documented experience in project management and team leadership 
   roles.

8. Experience in one or more of the following areas: multivariate 
   analysis, time series analysis, statistical data mining, numerical 
   solution of partial differential equations, exotic option pricing, 
   interest rate models, financial statistics and large software 
   development for the finance sector.
