Please pass this on to any students who might be interested.

These positions are suitable for MSc students with a good first
degree (1st or 2/1) in a numerate subject, preferably Statistics
or Mathematics (experienced/outstanding BSc graduates are
also encouraged to apply). A flexible, competitive package
including financial sector benefits is available to successful
applicants.

Who: Royal Bank of Scotland
Where: Edinburgh
What: Credit Scoring Analyst (Statistics / OR)
When: October 2000 (flexible)

The Royal Bank of Scotland is one of the UK's top 50 companies
and, with assets in excess of £80 billion, is Scotland's largest
bank. It has a history of innovation, from the invention of
overdrafts in 1728 through to the present day: the Royal Bank
was the first in the UK to offer a full Internet banking service, and
the first to carry out a Euro transaction. It has 650 branches
throughout Great Britain, around half of which are in Scotland. It
operates internationally, with offices in North America, the Far
East, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, Greece and the
Bahamas.

The many business areas of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group
include the UK Bank (serving retail, business, corporate and
institutional customers), Direct Line Group (the UK's largest
private motor insurer), Citizens Financial Group (a retail
and corporate bank operating in New England, USA), joint
ventures with Tesco Personal Finance and Virgin Direct, and a
strategic alliance with Banco Santander of Spain.

The Bank is seeking applicants to join its Retail Lending
Systems department, which controls the automated credit
decision processes for all personal and small business
customers of the UK Bank. These include
- the initial decision on whether or not to allow borrowing of a
      loan, mortgage or overdraft;
- ongoing evaluation of the performance of accounts for the
      purposes of extending credit facilities;
- identification of signals indicating that problems are developing
which may impact upon the customer's ability to repay
      outstanding debts.

This is achieved by means of credit scoring, behaviour scoring and
automated decision-making systems based on modelling customer
relationships and account performance. The department's role is
central to achieving the vital balance between risk and reward
which ensures continuing success for the Bank, and this has been
recognised in the rapid growth of Retail Lending Systems over
recent years to over 35 staff. Successful applicants will enjoy the
satisfaction of high-profile work with clear practical effects, within a
team-working environment.

The positions we are seeking to fill require an understanding of
advanced statistical techniques and an aptitude in using
mainframe statistical packages to manipulate and analyse large
datasets. SAS is the main package used, and the department
embraces new advances and techniques in its analyses.
Successful applicants will also be expected to make effective
use of Microsoft Office products, such as Excel, PowerPoint and
Word, and to present results of analyses to senior management.

The roles will involve implementing decision-making systems in
the branch network which will require new employees to quickly
gain an understanding of branch practices, culture and
commercial awareness.

In return, the Bank offers individual training and development
plans, promotion prospects, early responsibility, mentoring, and
opportunities to study for further professional qualifications.

Retail Lending Systems is based in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital
city. Rich in history and culture, Edinburgh houses many
museums, galleries and historic buildings, with a variety of parks
and gardens, and a skyline dominated by its 7th century Castle.
The city offers a wide choice of bars and restaurants to cater for
all tastes, and each year it hosts the world-famous International
Festival and Fringe.

Candidates wishing to apply for these vacancies should write,
enclosing a CV, to the following address:
      Charles Buchan
      Head of Retail Lending Systems
      The Younger Building
      Drummond House
      PO Box 20000
      3 Redheughs Avenue
      Edinburgh EH12 9RB

For these particular vacancies, interviews are scheduled for
February/March. However, quality applications are welcome
at any time.

Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Stuart Young (e-mail:
[log in to unmask], tel: 0131 523 4903).
