 THIRD INTERNATIONAL AMSTERDAM CONFERENCE

                                ON

           "MULTILEVEL ANALYSIS"

                     AND A COURSE

  "BOOTSTRAP AND MCMC APPLICATIONS IN MLWIN"

GENERAL

The Third International Conference on Multilevel Analysis will be
held in Amsterdam on April 9-10, 2001, followed on April 11 by a
one-day course taught by Harvey Goldstein and William Browne 
(Institute of Education, University of London) about bootstrap and 
MCMC applications in MlwiN. 

The conference will be about all aspects of statistical multilevel
analysis: theory, software, methodology, and innovative applications.
It is organised by Joop J. Hox (University of Utrecht) and 
Tom A.B. Snijders (University of Groningen).
The conference will be in an informal style, with much room for
discussion.
It will be held in the Aristo Conference Center in Amsterdam.
The course will be held at a computer room of the University of 
Amsterdam (buidings Roeterseiland).
The conference is sponsored by the 
Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).


CONFERENCE: INVITED SPEAKERS

There are three invited presentations:

Harvey Goldstein (Institute of Education, University of London) and
William Browne (Institute of Education, University of London) 
"Fitting models to complex data involving hierarchical, 
crossed and multiple membership structures"

Sophia Rabe-Hesketh (Institute of Psychiatry, University of London)
"Generalising the generalised linear mixed model"


CONFERENCE: YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS

You are invited to submit abstracts for contributed presentations.
Abstracts of 10 to 50 lines of text can be submitted until January
1, 2001. Those who submit an abstract will be notified before
January 15 about the acceptance for presentation at the conference.
Abstracts should be sent as an ASCII file (not in a different
wordprocessor format!!) by email to [log in to unmask]

COURSE: OUTLINE

BOOTSTRAP AND MCMC APPLICATIONS IN MLWIN

Harvey Goldstein and William Browne 
Institute of Education, University of London

Morning 

* Introduction to simulation using Mlwin 
  (WB - 20 minutes based on first part 
  of Chapter 13 of Mlwin manual); 
* The bootstrap (HG); 
- Parametric (30 min);
- Iterative (30 min);
- Non-parametric residuals bootstrap (30 min); 
* Data analysis by participants (60 min) 
  using own data or manual examples. 

Afternoon 

* Introduction to MCMC and Bayesian statistics (30 min WB); 
* MCMC modelling using Mlwin (WB 60 min); 
* Data analysis with participants data or manual examples; 
* Advanced highly complex data structures modelling with MCMC 
  (30 min WB + HG). 


DATE and LOCATION

The conference will be held in the Aristo Conference Center 
in Amsterdam on April 9-10, 2001. 
Location: Aristo Conference Center, Teleportboulevard 100, 
1043 EJ Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The subsequent course on 11 April 1999 will be held at a computer 
room 
in the Roeterseiland Buildings of the University of Amsterdam.
Participants will be informed about the time schedule and the
venue for the course.

PRICES

The conference fee is Dfl. 300,- (or US$ 130) and the price for
the course is also Dfl. 300,-. However, people who pay before
1 February 2001 will only pay Dfl. 250,- (US$ 110) for each separate
event. Participants in both the conference and the course pay Dfl.
600,- (US$ 260). Again a discount can be obtained by paying
before 1 February. In that case the total price amounts to Dfl. 500,-
(US$ 220). 
All prices must be increased by 17.5% V.A.T. (BTW) costs if paid
before January 1, 2001, and by 19% V.A.T. costs after January 1.
(The Dutch government changes the V.A.T. rate at that date.)
Coffee, tea, and lunches are included in these prices.

Note: the course by Harvey Goldstein and William Browne cannot 
include
more than 30 persons. The first 30 persons to register (note that
registration is put into effect only after receiving payment) are
entitled to participate in the course.
When the limiting number of participants for the course has been
reached, this will be announced at the web site.
