My guess (I manage another list):
a) Someone sent the original (misspelled) "unscribe" to the wrong place,
the list, so everyone saw it.
b) Others who did not know how to unsubscribe - but wanted to - followed
the example.
Ideally, a list would have some information attached to each message
regarding subscription procedures, but not all listservs have this
option in their software. My list's servers do not - I handle the
problem by periodically posting to the list an administrative message
with a website link that gives details on subscription options.
