To work on a project "Application of stochastic geometry to
understanding transport of microorganisms in soil". This project is
funded by BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research
Council) and will use methods of stochastic geometry, diffusion
processes and percolation theory to model the connectivity properties
of spatial structures that model soil and pore spaces, with a view to
determining the risks of bacteria leaching through the pores, and the
dependence of these risks on soil conditions and the size of bacteria.
This is a mainly mathematical and statistical project that may also
include a substantial simulation part to handle situations where
theoretical analysis is not feasible. The successful applicant will
have a postgraduate degree in probability or mathematical statistics
and experience in simulation methods and software development.
You will be employed jointly by University of Glasgow and University
of Strathclyde (both located in Glasgow), but you will be expected to
attend meetings with scientists from Biomathematics and Statistics
Scotland (Aberdeen) and Plant and Soil Science Department of
University of Aberdeen who do experimental and analytical work on
leaching of soil bacteria.
