We are announcing two courses which are scheduled to take place later this
month. Summary information is given below.
For more detailed information and registration forms please contact Kellie
Watkins at the Statistical Services Centre, The University of Reading
(email [log in to unmask]), providing your address and/or fax number.
*** A Review of Basic Statistics : 19-20 January ***
This course builds up the basic ideas of statistics systematically and
quickly. Examples from a scientific background are used to demonstrate
ways of summarising and presenting data and to introduce straightforward
and fundamental statistical methods. Techniques are covered for both
measurement data where methods are based on the normal distribution and
"yes/no" data. Participants can build on the skills acquired here by
attending a follow-on course on more specialised topics.
*** Sample Size Determination : 21 January ***
At the planning stage of an investigation the question of sample size is
critical. This course aims to give a practical introduction to sample size
determination in the context of some commonly used significance tests. The
problems associated with sample size determination are discussed and
potential solutions suggested. Examples from a scientific background are
used throughout. (Prior attendance on A Review of Basic Statistics, or
equivalent knowledge, is necessary for attending this course.)
