At Hull we charge the £1050 only for students redoing a module in the manner you describe. We
regard the module as part and parcel of the degree, but precise conditions have to be satisfied
before it is allowed.

! Colleagues may like to know that a side issue to this has arisen at
! Exeter.
!
! This year we have a number of undergraduate students who marginally
! failed one unit of their degree last year. They are being allowed to
! progress to study the succeeding year, while re-studying the failed
! unit at the same time. Therefore they are taking the normal 120
! credits for the new year plus additional credits for the unit being
! re-studied. The question arises, can they be charged more than the
! £1050 standard fee without infringing the constraints on top-up
! charges?
!
! It is clear from talking to CVCP and DfEE that if the failed unit is
! being re-studied on it's own, the student can be charged both for
! the re-study and the re-examination. On the other hand, DfEE has
! advised that re-studying alongside a full normal year is a grey area
! for fee charging.
!
! Can I ask what other institutions do, please.
