Dear all,
With the December date for confirming undergraduate attendance fast
approaching, I have been wondering how other universities deal with fees
incurred by home undergraduates who leave before 1st December and are
therefore ineligible for fee assistance from their LEA / the SLC.
It is obviously a difficult situation, but at UCL it was decided that we
should pursue these debts for any students who leave after the second
week of term - especially because students who leave college within a
month or so have taken up places that could well have been offered to
other students, therefore affecting HEFCE numbers and funding.
We try and be as sensitive as possible, and do waive these fees in
certain circumstances. However increasing numbers of students are
telling us that other universities don't pursue these fees at all. I'd
be curious to find out whether this is actually the case, and exactly
what the policy is in other institutions.
Many thanks,
Toby Clark
(As always, I will collate the results of this survey and forward them
on to anyone who asks. Alternatively, if there is enough interest I
will summarise the replies on mailbase. As this is potentially a
sensitive matter, I won't mention specific institutions or their policy
when collating the results.)
