NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT EMPLOYMENT STAFF
ANNUAL CONFERENCE
UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM
TUESDAY 27TH-THURSDAY 29TH JUNE 2000
The annual conference is organised by the National
Association of Student Employment Staff, and aims to
provide practitioners, business and researchers the
opportunity to share common ground, explore themes and
disseminate information.
The last five years has seen rapid growth in students
seeking to take paid work to provide financial support
during their studies; early research by NUS and individual
jobshops suggests that around 90% of students work during
vacations, with 40 - 70% working at some stage during
term-time. As a widespread response, HEIs have invested in
specialist student employment services (or 'jobshops') to
support students in their search for part-time and
temporary work.
The first jobshop was opened in 1992; there are now at
least 70 with another 10 currently in planning. Of these,
one third are based in careers services, one third in
students' unions and the remainder in personnel, student
services or education support offices. All aim to provide
a one-stop service for students seeking work, but there are
diverse methods of delivery including 'job centre' and
'recruitment agency' models; a quarter of jobshops charge
employers for their services. Jobshops work efficiently
with large volumes of students, mainly due to the student
focus which most have adopted; it is estimated that
jobshops nationally find employment for around 100,000
students each year - interestingly, a significant
proportion of this employment is within SMEs.
The National Association of Student Employment Staff was
established in July 1999. It aims to facilitate the
continuing development of the sector, encourage interaction
between practitioners and represent its membership on a
national level. NASES has arisen from the desire of
practitioners to share expertise, provide mutual support
and participate in national agendas. It incorporates an
existing infrastructure of regional and e-networks,
enabling swift and efficient communication with its
membership.
This years conference will focus on training and
development within the student employment sector. Over the
course of the next 3/4 weeks a detailed program of events
will be confirmed, together with costings for the event.
The usual mixture of presentations, workshops, conference
dinner and social activities, will form the basis of the
conference.
If you have a particular project or area of expertise and
would like the opportunity to run a workshop or training
session, then please contact me for further details.
Alternatively, please do not hesitate to contact any of the
NASES Conference Sub-Committee (Suzzanne Charlton, Janet
Dickerson, Dominic Drane, Gill Gregory or Tracey Innes) if
you have any suggestions which you would like included into
the program
We look forward to seeing you in June.
Regard,
Dominic Drane
