At Sussex I am not sure what the 'official' line is but certainly we get a
lot of people using flash photography and [I think] video cameras, and
nobody gets told off unless they are obstructing an aisle or being
otherwise discourteous.
>From a personal point of view, when I attended a graduation cermony last
year as a guest [at Birmingham University] I was appalled that I was not
permitted to take photographs - surely that is all part of the experience
for the guests? Think about it from the guest's point of view: if you
spend most of the time applauding the achievements of complete strangers,
the least you expect is that when 'your' graduand goes onto the stage for
their 15 seconds of fame you are permitted to capture the moment!

| Quick poll if anyone is available: do any of you prohibit use of video
| cameras by guests in award ceremonies, and if you do, is this because
| you have a contract with a professional video company for the
| ceremonies?

| Many thanks
