The College -like the University of Leeds whose degrees it awards -
hands over certificates on the platform. Certificates are put into
transparent plastic folders and stored in running order on the
platform. Careful checking of graduands locates absentees and these
ars deleted from presenter's ( announcer) copies of programmes 5 mins before the
procession sets off. A member of registry staff on the platform
hands the certificate to the Chancellor/VC/PVC as the name is read out
and discards the certificates belonging to absentees. The Chancellor
shakes the graduand by the hand and hands over the certificate.
The certificates are stored in boxes in running order prior to the
ceremony and transferred to compartmentalised wooden containers on
the platform.
It sounds complicated - but works very smoothly and the personal
touch is appreciated .

It's one of *those* questions again .....
Until now, we have contrived *not* to give graduates
their degree diplomas at the ceremony, but are now
considering doing so.
For those of you who do so, any practical tips in
terms of the procedure at the ceremony?
F'rinstance:-
At what stage do you distribute them?
Who actually hands them over?
How do you keep X hundred scrolls in ceremony order,
without an explosion of tubes/envelopes?
*Do* use provide ubes, or envelopes?
etc etc
