Colleagues,
I originally sent this message on 12 January 2000. After a stunning
response of one... could I try again? Apologies for any inconvenience, and
for cross-posting...

The University of Brighton is currently reconsidering its language provision
and the awards available for language courses. It was agreed that it would
be useful to gain an overview of practice at other institutions to inform
discussion. With this in mind I would be very grateful if you could answer
the following questions on behalf of your institution.
1) Do you offer sub-degree level awards in languages (ie University
Certificate or Diploma rather than CertHE/DipHE)?
2) If so, how many credits are required at which level(s) for these awards?
3) Are these units/credits taken as part of a student's degree course, or
are they additional, optional units?
4) If these credits are taken as part of a student's course, does this mean
that the credit gained is, in effect, counted twice (once for the award in
languages and once for the degree)?
5) If these credits are taken as additional units, how are they funded (ie
is the student required to pay for the additional modules)?
6) Can students, alternatively, take a certain number of language credits as
part of their overall diet and receive a different named award such as "with
<language>"?
7) If so, how many credits at which level(s) are required for this?
8) Do you credit-rate any time spent abroad, particularly the year abroad,
and if so how do you do this - how much credit, at what level, what is
assessed and how?
If you respond to me direct, I would be happy to provide a summary of
responses to interested parties.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you are able to give.
Cheers
Jon
