Dear Jean
The University of Wales permits awards of posthumous research degrees
provided that a number of criteria, established in our regs for posthumous
awards, are satisfied - in brief:
- initially, the candidate's supervisor should put the extant works together
(but not add to them) and should prepare a report on them for consideration
by the examining board. The Head of the Department concerned should also
submit an argued recommendation concerning the possible award of a degree.
In addition, the following must be satisfied:
* enough of the research project must be completed to allow the examiners to
make a full and proper assessment of the scope of the thesis;
* the standard of the research work completed by the candidate must be
similar to that required for the award of the degree in question, and must
demosntrate the candidate's grasp of the subject area;
* the written material (ie. draft chapters, published work (or work prepared
for publication), presentations to conferences, progress reports etc) must
demonstate that the candidate was capable of writing a thesis of the
required standard.
I hope that this helps; the making of posthumous awards is difficult becasue
of their very nature.
John

Does anyone have any advice they can give me on the possibility of the award
of a post-humous degree to a research student who was in the final stages of
thesis preparation?
