At Staffordshire University the only time we would deduct amounts from
the final award is if the bank statement reveals holidays abroad or
excessive amounts spent on a car, for example, when the student has no
dependants and lives within walking distance of the university. I
think we have only reduced awards half a dozen times for these
reasons and only then after a discussion with the student in person.
It is very difficult to judge excessive spending at an off-licence,
for example, because the ones local to the university also sell food
and offer cashback.
Postgraduates - we do not assume income - if nothing is revealed we
ask several questions, including whether or not they have applied for
a Career Development Loan - a condition of application at
Staffordshire. The important question of course is how the student
intended to fund postgraduate study before enroling on the course and
to discover how their circumstances have changed since enrolment.
This year we are also offering postgraduate bursaries - up to a
maximum of £2,000, but these may not be used to pay for tuition fees.
