We have a problem with the proportions being derived from HESA
1998-99 for possible use as funding premiums.
Our data suggests that we had no new FT UG students in receipt of
DSA. However, we know this NOT to be the case, and the problem
we have in this regard centres around the timing of data
collection on students as well as the timing of LEA assessments.
We ask students to identify if they are in receipt of DSA on
their enrolment form at the beginning of the academic year. We
are aware however that most students will not actually have the
result of any assessment by the start of the Autumn term, not the
least because LEAs do not concentrate on processing applications
for DSA over the summer months.
During the rest of the year, students will not necessarily inform
us if they have been successful subsequently, and thus our
Student Records system will not be updated prior to any HESA
return dates. Even our Disability Services units have patchy
records, reliant as they are also on students choosing to inform
us of their changed status.
We assume we are not the only university in this position, and
would be grateful for comments!
