VIEWING FACT OR FICTION?
Popular Factual Entertainment, Editing and
Editorial Policy
Centre for Communication and Information Studies (CCIS) at the University
of Westminster
and
Voice of the Listener and Viewer (VLV)
Tuesday 27 June 2000.
Boardroom, 309 Regent Street, W1
Today, popular factual entertainment increasingly dominates our
television
screens. It blurs the traditional dividing line between fact and fiction.
How are they made? What implications do they have for the manner in which
television represents the real world? Why do viewers watch them? What
editorial standards do public service broadcasters adopt before
transmitting
popular factual entertainment?
These, and many others, are the questions that will be addressed by
professional broadcasters, regulators and senior academics in a one day
symposium jointly organised by the Centre for Communication and
Information
Studies (CCIS) at the University of Westminster and the Voice of the
Listener and Viewer (VLV) on Tuesday 27 June 2000.
Key speakers will include:
Phil Harding, Director of Editorial Policy at the BBC
Jeremy Mills, from Lion Television, Executive Producer of Castaway 2000
Peter Bazalgette, from Bazal
Andrea Millwood Hargrave, Director of Research, Broadcasting Standards
Commission
Robert Towler, Head of Audience Research, Independent Television
Commission.
Dr Annette Hill (CCIS, University of Westminster),
Professor John Corner (University of Liverpool)
Jon Dovey (University of West of England)
Dr Richard Kilborn (University of Stirling)
Dr Brian McNair (University of Stirling)
Announcing the symposium, Professor Vincent Porter, Director of CCIS and
an
elected member of VLV's Management Committee said: 'whether viewers can
understand the boundary between fact and fiction in their television
programmes raises important issues of public policy. This symposium will
address industry, academic and public concerns about the popularity of
'reality' television.'
Seminar fee: 65.00. Students: 18.50 including buffet lunch.
