DESIGNS OF DESIRE
THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF SCOTLAND
A One Day Conference
The Lecture Theatre, The Royal Society of Edinburgh, George Street,
Edinburgh
Tuesday 16th May 2000.
Designs of Desire explores the fascinating world of design. Featuring works
dating from 1500 to 1851, the exhibition shows how craftsmen and
manufacturers worked with artists to produce artefacts which are beautiful,
ingenious and often witty. The exhibition includes nearly two hundred
prints and drawings from the National Gallery of Scotland, and the designs
are complemented by displays of ceramics, silver, jewellery and embroidery
on loan from the National Museums of Scotland.
This one day conference will draw on the research of academics and experts
in the fields of the decorative arts and architecture. Confirmed speakers
include: Timothy Clifford, Director of the National Galleries of Scotland;
Alistair Rowan, Principal of Edinburgh College of Art; Peter Thornton,
former Keeper of the Sir John Soane Museum; Anthony Wells Cole, Senior
Curator of Temple Newsam House, Leeds; Diana Scarisbrick, an expert on
