Rachel.
Welcome to the list.
I have an autistic son and I work as the Property Services Manager for
Emirates (an airline) based in Dubai.
My interest in disabilities is generated by my son's disability - sometimes
it takes a personal kick in the pants to generate an interest.
I am quite active in following the impact of the DDA (which to my mind is a
good piece of legislation but which is very poor at looking at the needs of
the mentally impaired). The legislation and associated codes of practice
are full of examples of good practice for the physically handicapped but has
nothing much for the mentally impaired. The proposed extension of the act
to cover schools also has an impact on Special Educational Needs provision
which is a good thing and is something that I have to follow avidly to
ensure that my son's educational needs are met.
Funny though, that the SEN Manager for the whole of the North Devon area
(where my son is based) had no idea of the consultation paper that the
Government has issued. The first that she knew of it was when I handed her
a copy of my response to the consultation. The Government seem to be
consulting everybody except those that are supposed to enforce the
provisions that they are proposing which isn't exactly clever.
Anything that you can contribute on this would be of interest to me. If you
want to discuss any matters off list, my work e-mail is

personal e-mail is [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> .
Regards,
Patrick
