Hello everyone,
I thought that it was interesting that in San Francisco
they are dealing with the height issue in access. This is
not a normal topic in access and often over looked.
Has anyone on this list ever given advice in this area or
though on this issue?

Exciting legislative opportunity in San Francisco.
The city is currently considering adding the words
"height" and "weight" to the anti-discrimination
ordinance. That's the thing that says, "We do not
discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex," etc.
If this law passes, it would be only the fourth place in
the U.S. that offers any legal protection to people of all
weights in employment, housing, education, and
access to public accommodation. I don't know what
kinds of legal protections people of different heights
enjoy, but I'm guessing they're not enough.
That's why I'd like to alert people to the upcoming
hearing in San Francisco, before the city's Finance
Committee. This will be the only opportunity for
public comment on this issue. If the committee votes
in favor, the law will go to the city's board of
supervisors for a vote. If they vote yes, it will go
to the mayor, who will sign it into law (I hope!).
It would be wonderful if members of the dwarfism
community could attend the hearing and speak about
your experiences with height-related discrimination in
the above-mentioned areas.
Here's the info on the hearing:
Wednesday, May 3
10am (lasting no more than 2 hours)
San Francisco City Hall
(cross streets Van Ness Ave. and McAllister)
Room 263
Please e-mail me if you are able to attend. Please
feel free to forward this message to other people in
your community! This is such an exciting opportunity.
I hope people here will be able to join with us in
support of this law.
Sincerely - Marilyn Wann <[log in to unmask]>
