Dear Accessibuilt List Members
As earlier mentioned to you, from 27th November you will notice some
changes in the list. There will be new references to JISCmail. The
references to JISCmail mark the transition from the use of Mailbase
software to LISTSERV software.
*****************************************************************
The important point is that your accessibuilt emails should from 27th
November be addressed to:- [log in to unmask] and bookmarks
to the list page and archives etc will need to be changed to
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk
*****************************************************************
Everyone hopes and expects that the transition will be smooth and gradual.
As with changing telephone codes - for a period of up to six months there
will be automatic translation of Mailbase commands and addresses into the
corresponding LISTERV commands and addresses. But after that time we will
be expected to have become familiar with the new facility.
The LISTSERV software is supported by CLRC - the Central Laboratories of
the Research Councils. The acronym JISC stands for Joint Information
System Committee. The JISC are responsible for the JANET physical network
that has supported the mailbase system and other forms of inter-university
telecoms for some decades.
The LISTSERV software has a greater range of facilities than the Mailbase
system. It is claimed that LISTSERV has more members than any other in the
world, so we shall be using a system that is becoming a worldwide
standard. Some of you may already be users of LISTSERV software on lists
in other countries. Using JISCmail should make it easier for all of us to
find, and participate in, LISTSERV lists run by other organisations in the
UK and those run from other countries.
Most of us - especially list owners - can expect to get guidance to smooth
over the transition. For matters such as joining and leaving the list you
should continue to contact me - or Rita Newton, or Judith Irving at SURFACE
as
co-list-owners. But if you have any other problems with the transition you
could first have a look at the JISC website at
<http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/contact_us.htm>.
JISCmail home page is <http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/>
There may be a few teething troubles but day-to-day you shouldn't notice
any difference. I'll keep you posted re any significant developments.
Finally - Use your list!
Regards,
Marcus
