Subject: Land Use Planning and Transport
Dear List Owner,
I write to inform you of the activities of the Transport Visions Network
and in particular its attempts to better integrate thinking in transport
and land use planning. I would like to inquire if it would be possible for
the following message to be disseminated to your membership through your
mailing list.
Visions for the Future of Land Use Planning
The Transport Visions Network is about to start debating the topic of land
use planning. It is looking for innovative solutions on the way in which we
shape our living environment. The Transport Visions Network is a forum for
young professionals to explore visions of the future of transport. The
Network is sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council (EPSRC), the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund and the Department of the
Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR). It is co-ordinated by
members of the Transportation Research Group of the University of
Southampton. It operates through email and face-to-face discussion.
The Network is exploring eight transport-related Themes over a period of
three years. The first Theme report 'Society and Lifestyles' is now
available from Landor publications. An electronic copy of the report is
also available (see:
http://www.trg.soton.ac.uk/research/TVNetwork/reports/report1.pdf).
Theme 2 'Transportation Requirements' has concluded and theme 3 'Land Use
Planning' is due to commence on Monday 27th November. In addressing this
theme it is recognised that future transport solutions are heavily
dependent on the need to effectively integrate land use and transport
policy. All aspects of land use planning are to be considered (for example,
housing, the countryside, recycling of land, local facilities, economic
instruments, goods distribution, urban design, the impact of
telecommunications, transport infrastructure).
The Network has some 200 members but is keen to encourage new members to
join and offer their views and ideas on land use planning and transport.
Membership of the Network is open to anyone aged 35 or under. The Network
website provides the mechanism for individuals to join as well as serving
as a medium for disseminating information (see:
http://www.trg.soton.ac.uk/research/TVNetwork/).
Mark Beecroft (A Co-ordinator of the Transport Visions Network).
