Apologies for Cross Posting

June 8th, 2000, Workshop. Birmingham

Use of key skills, occupational standards and indications of employability
in course design.

The Key/Core Skills Knowledge and Understanding in the Built Environment
project (K3UBE) has been funded by the European Social Fund and carried out
by a research team from the Built Environment Education Development Services
Unit at the University of Central England. This team has been charged with
investigating and testing ways of using occupational standards, key skills
and knowledge and understanding in aiding Higher Education course designers.
Presentations in the morning will review the ways in which the team has used
key skills and occupational standards, to identify skills and knowledge
elements which can be expressed in the workplace, and their development and
assessment within a work based unit on a post graduate programme in town
planning.
A second presentation will explore ways in which the team has used
occupational standards and key skills to design and refine a Computer Aided
Design study course as part of an undergraduate programme in Landscape
Design. The intention was to allow a national accreditation of this part of
the course and occupational standards and key skills were used as the basis
of the programme.
The afternoon will focus on employability, with a presentation on the
current national position on indications of employability and the various
interpretations of what employers actually want from graduates and what they
get, or don't get.
A second presentation will look at key skills and examine ways in which they
could be used to indicate employability for various professions, and tasks,
based on a cross reference with the skill requirements of occupational
standards, NVQs and specific jobs.

The event is free and delegates are invited to attend either the morning
session 11am-1pm, the afternoon session 2pm-4pm, or all day, with a buffet
lunch provided.

Numbers are limited, so please contact
