I have been helping an academic colleague with sources for first
appearances of myths - eg ostrich buries its head in sand - and am
stumped on the last one.
The OED mentions the myth that ostriches lay their eggs and then
abandon them, leaving the sun to hatch them, but doesn't give any
reference to first occurrence. Most of the othe folklore about
ostriches refers back to classical writers, such as Pliny, but we
can't find this particular piece of folklore cited.
Can anyone suggest sources?
Thanks
Jennifer
