PRESS RELEASE
British Library Co-operation and
Partnership Award to LASER
The British Library has announced the successful awards (subject to
final confirmation) resulting from the first call for proposals in the
Co-operation and Partnership Programme established in 1999.
LASER's CAPITAL Project (Co-operative acquisitions partnerships:
increasing the total resource available to users of libraries) was
amongst the successful list of awards.
LASER is proud to be one of the first recipients of the British Library
Awards, which is a major programme for research and the development of
future models of co-operative provision and partnership.
The major aim of the project is to build new partnerships between the
British Library, Regional Library Systems and the public and higher
education sectors in collaborative acquisitions, retention and access
with regard to monographic materials. This project builds on LASER's
current review of its long established co-operative acquisitions
schemes, and also reflects one of LASER's current strategic objectives
to increase the availability of materials by co-operative means to users
of libraries. This project also relates to opportunities for new
cross-sector, regional and national arrangements in the light of the
government agenda for learning, access and networking.
The project will use the LASER CD-Rom analysis tool to produce detailed
statistics of holdings in the public library sector (LASER/WMRLS),
compare these with the holdings of BLDSC and with higher education via
the M25 link in London and other parts of the South East using Z39.50.
Surveys of current acquisitions policies, retention, access and storage
facilities for monographic materials will be undertaken. A Workshop and
Review will form the basis of the projects recommendations for new
partnerships in these areas.
The value of the Award is £33,500 and the project has a 15 month
timescale.
