Dear Colleagues in UK and Irish Further and Higher
Education Institutions and UK Research Councils,
I am writing with a quick update about the state-of-play
regarding the JISC/OUP agreement for the Oxford English
Dictionary Online.
Following positive community feedback to JISC circulars
01/00 and 02/00, we have moved forward to finalise
arrangements by which further and higher education
institutions and research councils will be able to
subscribe to OED Online. The 3-year agreement starts
on 1 June 2000.
CHEST will be managing this agreement on behalf of the
JISC. It is expected that subscriptions can begin 18 May,
and an announcement will be sent out that day with an
overview of the agreement and of subscription procedures.
All details, including licence forms, will also be
available on the CHEST website at:
http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/oed/
OUP has been very generous in offering an extended free
trial for the Oxford English Dictionary Online. This trial
service has been available to the community since
mid-March, and in fact is still available. If your
college/university would like to sign up for a free trial
now, please contact Susanna Lob, Oxford University Press,

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know.
Cheers,
Alicia
