UK Online User Group meeting: http://www.ukolug.org.uk/
**Educating for Information Literacy**
6th June 2000, 10.00 - 16.30
University of Strathclyde, Glasgow
The focus of the workshop will be to identify teaching and learning strategies
for information literacy that could work for you. There will be talks from the
course leaders on current approaches to teaching and learning, but the emphasis
will be on structured discussion/ feedback sessions. The number of participants
is limited to 25.
By the end of the day, you should have:
* A broader perspective on developments in teaching and learning, which can
help
you extend your range of teaching methods * Specific ideas on how an
information
literacy programme could be developed or improved in your own institution. *
The
workshop will address issues such as: * What approaches to teaching and
learning
have you taken so far: and what has worked best? * Can aligning information
literacy with areas such as Lifelong Learning, Investors in People, Continuing
Professional Development and Knowledge Management be a sensible way of
integrating training strategy and 'selling' information literacy to your users?
* How can you provide motivation and feedback to those learning about
information literacy if you do not have explicit power to implement the 'A'
part
of TLA (Teaching-Learning-Assessment)?
An advance questionnaire will ask you about your definition of information
literacy, the extent to which you are already involved in training, and the user
groups that you are targeting. We will use this information to help shape the
programme and decide how to group participants for discussion. There will be
handouts summarising some of the different information literacy initiatives
worldwide, and providing further reading.
Course leaders: Sheila Webber is a Lecturer in the Department of Information
Science at the University of Strathclyde. Bill Johnston is a Lecturer in the
University's Centre for Academic Practice, which provides advice and support on
teaching and learning issues to both staff and students. Sheila and Bill run an
Information Literacy class for business school undergraduates, and a web site
summarising their academic work in the area is at
