UKOLUG MEETING
Legal Resources & Official Publications on the World Wide Web
19th April 2000, 09.30-16.30
The John Rylands University Library, University of Manchester, Manchester
Course Leader: Laurence W. Bebbington (University of Birmingham)
The world wide web has become an intuitive, pervasive and reasonably
inexpensive resource for a wide range of users. This one-day course will look
at
legal resources (statutes, law reports etc.) and official publications
available
on the WWW. Excellent sources of full text materials (also including reports;
official documents; bulletins and journals; press releases etc.) will be
featured. Mailing lists, discussion groups, newsgroups and alerting services
will also be covered. Attention will be paid primarily to UK resources but
coverage will also include European Union sources. Sources covered will include
government and other official sites, academic sites, publishers sites etc. The
course aims to raise awareness of the rich diversity of material available to
those who need access to legal, official and regulatory information and to
build
confidence in using this complex body of materials. Some of the problems
involved in using such sources will also be highlighted. The course will be
designed to meet the interests of academic, business and individual searchers.
Documentation and explanatory notes supporting the course will be sent out to
registered participants two weeks in advance of the course so that participants
will derive the maximum benefit from attendance.
